…In Consistency

Dear reader, as you know, this site is branded “Looking for God #HEISEVERYWHERE,” so please allow me to share with you a sermon I wrote this morning. May you find God…in consistency.

The theme for today is consistency. Whenever I start writing for the purpose of speaking publicly, I like to start with a definition to establish meaning. Dictionary.com defines consistency as the “steadfast adherence to the same principles, course, form, etc.”

When we have prayed to God and received guidance from His Holy Spirit on what to do and how we should do it, we should be consistent in that until God instructs us to do differently.
Let us be consistent, sticking to the same principles, the same course, and the same form.

John 14:6 sums up the principle and the course we should take, and the scripture reads this way, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.”
That means that, as believers, we should follow Christ Jesus’s doctrine, thinking, speaking, and doing according to His teachings.

The form we should stick to should have a countenance of cheerfulness with light in our eyes. Let’s go into a couple of scriptures about cheerfulness and light in our eyes.
Proverbs 15:13a KJV states that a merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance.
From this scripture in Proverbs, we know that to have a cheerful countenance, our heart must be cheerful. We must make sure that our heart is right, and who can make it right? Christ Jesus, the heart mechanic, can fix it and make it right.
Once our heart is right, our countenance can be cheerful. That is part of our form which is our body language. Now regardless of our body language, the eyes do not lie, so what should we do next? We must take care of the light in our eyes.
Matthew 6:22 KJV says, “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.”

Now, what does it mean for the eye to be single? That’s a good question.

“The word single in the scripture phrase “an eye single” is significant. When our eye is single, it is focused. It gives direction and allows us to see which is of greatest importance. It means our actions are purposeful and directed. There are no distractions, detours, or deviations.” –Missionary Donald Q. Cannon, An Eye Single to the Glory of God

Now that is interesting. What that is saying to me is that we should be looking at and focused on the Lord Jesus without our eyes all over the place distracted by this and that, distracted by other people’s way of living, distracted by the world’s politics, distracted by the world’s government system. What does the Lord say? What does His Kingdom require of us? That is what we should be focused on. If the light in our eyes is single, focused and concentrated in one direction, it can cast more light to see where we are going than if it was spread out like a flood light. If you’ve ever paid attention to the light cast from a beam of light versus a flood light, then you know that a flood light does not have a very strong reach and it is very weak. A beam of light is concentrated in one narrow spot, focusing all its energy there to serve the greatest purpose. That is why lighthouses use a powerful beam versus a flood light because the beam is stronger, and it reaches further because its purpose is to reach the lost that are far away from shore.

Side Note: Now this part was not included in this morning’s message, but let me go in depth here. When our walk is blameless (narrow path, straight gate in Matthew 7:13-14 KJV) in the eyes of the Lord Jesus, we can reach more souls for Christ than if we compromise (broad path, wide gate in Matthew 7:13) our God-assigned principles. You can not truly and effectively reach sinners by sinning with them.

To recap, our principles and our course should be Jesus for He is the way, the truth, and the life. Our form should be a cheerful countenance, and our focus should be on God.
If we are steadfast in this principle, in this course, and in this form, what we are then doing is showing our faith to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen? Let us do what is holy, pleasing, and acceptable to Christ Jesus, and may we always find God…In Consistency.
